Sekret Sekret was a post-punk psychedelic band that grew out of the late-70s Sydney punk scene with members from Broken Toys, Johnny Dole and the Scabs and Blackrunner. The band became influential in the Australian underground scene and had a number of successes in the indie charts, most notably with their sonic-folk hit 'New King Jack'.
The band played mostly inner-city venues from 1979 to 1984 and became known for their catchy pop-punk tunes as well as their low-volume/low-exertion live performances, which became louder and marginally more animated as time passed. The band broke up twice, first from burn-out, then from differences over direction. Three of its members went on to mainstream chart success with surf-dub-funk band the Cruel Sea. The band's frontman, David Virgin, pursued a solo career and continues to record and perform in his native Dublin.
This site came about after Feel Presents flagged the idea of a Sekret Sekret retrospective double CD. The project was put on hold for a while when negotiations broke down over the use of original master tapes. The band's first recordings were done with Basilisk, an independent label run by Martin Bishop (deceased), who refused to hand over the tapes. Those recordings, including an unreleased single, are now lost, according to a family member who is in possession of much of the material from the Basilisk studio.
A 2-CD release of mostly live material looks set to go ahead in 2008, but in the meantime take a look around the site, check out some images and listen to some mp3s. And if you just can't get enough, check out Sekret Sekret on MySpace, which is maintained by David.
